Why Peasants Trained Kendo

Описание: Because Kendo is a form of training the katana, you might think that it was only the samurai who trained in it. However, in the past, peasants actually trained it too.

While carrying and training with a real katana was a privilege to the samurai, fighting with bamboo swords was allowed by anyone. In an era when there was hardly any amusement, fighting sumo and kendo was entertainment for the peasants.

Also, during the end of the Edo period, the turbulent Bakumatsu era, there was a chance for even the peasants to become samurai and fight for the Shogunate (samurai government) if they had skills in katana. That’s why more people trained even more seriously.

The famous Shinsengumi was the representative group of people who actually won the rank of samurai with their high level of skills.
