Johann Sebastian Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin (1720) are the the spiritual and intellectual summit of the solo violin repertoire. The opening movement of the Sonata No. 1 in G minor, BWV 1001, Adagio, builds onto a carefully constructed bass progression, punctuated by suspensions and long-range voice-leading that suggests an implicit polyphony. Woven into it are embellishments in the tradition of the baroque "Affektenlehre", not just as decorative additions, but structural carriers of meaning: each flourish shapes harmonic tension, articulates cadential arrival, and generates the sense of inward speech that defines the movement’s ethos. For historical background on "Affektenlehre", look back to Giulio Caccini (1551–1618), who developed "stile rappresentativo", where the leading voice moves beyond a purely monodic presentation toward rhythmic flexibility and expressive freedom — a tradition of affective, speech-shaped phrasing that resonates deeply with Bach’s Adagio.
In this concert, the movement appears in a new light — through the piano transcription by Sergio Fiorentino (1927–1998). Fiorentino’s Bach transcription does not “thicken” the texture; instead it reveals the latent inner voices and polyphonic layers already present in Bach’s writing, allowing harmonic weight, resonance, and cantabile depth to emerge.
To honor and remember the children who lost their lives in the tragic shooting in Graz on June 10, 2025, Nareh opened her recital with this work.
