June 6, 2024 marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings along the Normandy coast during World War II. More than 150,000 American, British and Canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50-mile stretch of heavily fortified French coast ultimately liberating northwest Europe from German occupation.
This event is commemorated here by the USAF Band of Mid-America with an original composition by Master Sgt. Jeremy Martin titled "Normandy, 1944." Filmed at a live performance on May 22, 2024, the video features vintage footage of the preparation and execution of the historic 1944 invasion.
On D-Day, the US Army Air Forces contribution was unprecedented in its concentration, and phenomenal in its size. In total, 8,722 aircraft were dispatched by the Eighth and Ninth Air Forces.
