Installing an extractor fan requires many steps such as room size, location, duct, fan type, vent, timer, working, etc. Watch this video to learn all the steps and products you'd need to be able to install an extractor fan.
1) Room size - 0:00
2) Fan's location - 0:50
3) Cutting plastic duct - 1:28
4) Set fan's timer - 2:05
5) Mounting fan - 2:11
6) Working explained - 3:27
Step 1 - Measure your room and select the right size & type of extractor fan.
For example, 100 mm (4 inch) extractor fan can extract up to 85 m3 per hour (50 cubic feet per minute) and 150 mm (5 inch) extractor fan can extract up to 130 m3 per hour (76.5 cubic feet per minute).
In some countries it's called extractor fan, exhaust fan, humidistat, etc. What is it called in your country?
Two most common places to install an extractor fan are kitchen and bathroom. You can't fit an extractor fan in the bathroom if it's not design for bathroom. Read the extractor fan's specifications for the correct environment.
Step 2 - Select a place for mounting the extractor fan as high as possible on the wall or ceiling, if preferred.
Before drilling the hole, make sure there are no wires, pipes, or studs.
For selecting "Extractor Fan Hole Size", watch the video in the description.
You'd also need a plastic pipe or duct and wall grille or air vent. The air vent will help to prevent the air flow from outside to inside the room.
Depending on the size of your pipe and vent, pipe/duct might go inside or outside of the vent's protruding inlet.
This part of the fan goes over the pipe and covers it.
Step 3 - cutting the plastic duct to length
For the full video "How To Cut a Plastic Duct", watch the video in the description. IMPORTANT - when cutting the plastic duct, cut it a littler shorter than the point marked. Since, duct goes over the vent and inside the fan's outlet, duct could be a bit shorter. This will make sure that the fan and the wall will be flush (no gap) once installed.
Step 4 - change extractor fan timer to your desire time.
Step 5 - Mounting the extractor fan
The arrows on the extractor fan pointing upwards means that this part of the fan needs to be at the top!
I recommend asking a competent electrician to do the wiring for the fan.
Step 6 - extractor fan working explained
Fans in the bathroom are usually wired to the light switch. Even after turning OFF the fan/light switch, the fan will continue to run until the timer's time. Live feed means that there will still be electricity in the fan to power the timer even after turning off the switch. IMPORTANT - don't touch the wires even when the fan is off. In order to cut off the live feed, you could install an isolation switch.
Air vent is flapping more than usual in here because of the strong winds. Air vent should open around 30 degrees to let the inside air out.
Wall grille or air vent help to prevent the air entering from outside when fan is off and opens to allow to exhaust air to outside when fan is ON.
