The distinct sound of Cicada song fills the air in Chicago’s Horner Park on a warm summer evening. These are my favorite insects! Here are some cool cicada facts:
🪲 Cicadas first appeared during the Late Triassic period. Dinosaurs listened to the same Cicada song that you’re listening to right now!
🪲 Cicadas do not bite or sting. They may clumsily fly into you or land on you, but they mean no harm.
🪲 Cicadas have membranous structures called “tympana” which essentially function as ears. Males are able to disable theirs when they’re singing in order to prevent hearing loss.
🪲 The largest cicada species is the Empress Cicada, which can grow up to 2.8 inches in body length and 8 inches in wingspan!
🪲 Cicada wings contain nanoscale-sized spikes which tear bacteria apart upon contact. This is the first-known biomaterial capable of killing bacteria!
⚠️ Keep an eye out for cicadas when walking on sidewalks! Many nymphs and adults alike are slow-moving and don’t know that they’re in danger of being crushed. If you gently put your hand in front of them, they’ll likely climb on for a little ride to safety ✅
