On Tuesday evening, the banks of the Bhagirathi River at Gopal Ghat, Berhampore, came alive with chants, lamps, and devotion as hundreds gathered to honor the river that gives life to millions.
The event, organized under the guidance of Berhampore Municipality Chairman Narugopal Mukherjee, was part of the nationwide Ganga Utsav celebrations, marking November 4th—the day Ganga was declared India’s National River in 2008.
Chairman Mukherjee personally performed the Arati, emphasizing the importance of keeping the river pollution-free and preserving it for future generations. The celebration also included awareness rallies, cleanliness drives along the ghats, and a district-level seminar on “Water Conservation and River Rejuvenation” at Berhampore Girls’ College.
Locals expressed their joy, saying it was a dream come true to witness such a divine ceremony in their own city.
