Physics Broken: Rolls-Royce’s Ice-Cooled Engine Hits Mach 7 Without Overheating
At speeds above Mach 5, the air entering an aircraft engine can exceed 1,000°C, hot enough to melt most metals. For decades, this thermal barrier stopped engineers from building reusable hypersonic aircraft.
But a revolutionary engine developed by Reaction Engines and Rolls-Royce may have solved the problem.
At the heart of the design is an extraordinary technology called the SABRE precooler — a heat exchanger capable of cooling incoming air from 1,000°C to -150°C in less than 1/20th of a second. This allows the engine to operate like a jet at lower speeds and then switch to rocket mode for hypersonic and orbital flight.
The result could enable:
✈️ Mach 5–7 hypersonic aircraft
🚀 Runway-to-space spaceplanes like Skylon
⚡ Next-generation military hypersonic vehicles
If fully realized, this technology could transform global travel, defense systems, and access to space.
