Lost Universe is a light novel written by Hajime Kanzaka which got an anime adaptation done by E&G Films back in 1998.
It only lasted 26 episodes, and was plagued with numerous production problems. Most notably, large amounts of the raw work for the first few episodes and the opening was destroyed in a studio fire and had to be quickly replaced leading to fairly sketchy quality for those episodes.
Here we can see a comparison of the uncompleted sequence of the opening (which was used when the series aired) and its finished version that was used in latter releases.
