NUNNEY CASTLE: Giant waves crash over sea wall as historic steam loco passes Dawlish

Описание: 5029 Nunney Castle passes Dawlish and its giant waves yesterday evening – following in the tracks of The Mayflower just 22 minutes earlier. It's not often you get to see two steam trains so close together on the mainline, let alone passing stormy seas with waves crashing over the wall. I've posted a video of The Mayflower making this journey, hauled by the double-header of 7029 Clun Castle and 5596 Bahamas. They were travelling from Plymouth back to Bristol, with two diesel engines completing the journey to Birmingham New Street. Nunney Castle, meanwhile, was hauling the English Riviera Express from Kingswear back to Taunton, with 57311 The Institution of Mechanical Engineers at the rear. The diesel engine completed the journey to High Wycombe. To get from the station to the footbridge I'm standing on, I walked and ran along the sea wall for several hundred yards, hoping not to get drenched by the waves. Unsurprisingly, I failed. With spray finding its way onto my phone camera lens while on the bridge, and with my shirt and shorts soaked and no other options handy, I had to use my underwear to dry off the glass. It was Nunney Castle's final scheduled trip to Devon this year with the English Riviera Express, following several visits in the summer. The GWR Castle Class loco returned to action in the spring following a 10-year hiatus and a major overhaul. On the first day of the Second World War evacuations, Nunney Castle helped to carry children from London to the safety of the countryside. The loco was used to haul the Royal Train in October 1957, from London Paddington to Gloucester. I will post more videos of yesterday's trains over the coming days, including at Cogload Junction, Whiteball Tunnel, Cockwood, Teignmouth, Goodrington and Kingswear.
