Hi Guys and thank you for joining me on another book review. Today we are going to dive into How to Draw the Animated Nexus. Tips and Techniques. By none other than the man who created him, Steve ‘the dude’ Rude. Now for those who aren’t familiar with Steve Rude, other than being the creator of nexus, is an artist that you really don’t see too much anymore at least in the younger generation of comic book artists, and that is someone who really knows how to draw. When I was a kid I remember my dad talking about the old Flash Gordon comic strip and h0w it was incredibly well drawn compared to the comic strips of the 90’s. It was true and though I think Liberty Meadows was an exception, for the most part there was a real lack of draftsmanship out there. Occasionally we’d come across a reprint of Flash Gordon, or Prince Valiant by Hal Foster and it truly was amazing to see the level of detail and realism in the poses of the figures. In the early 90’s I was really into comics and I still am a huge fan of all the artists that I was into back then, but one day I went to my local comic book shop in Burke VA and came a cross The Worlds Finest where Batman, and Superman swap cities for three issues. Steve Rude illustrated those issues and it was absolutely incredible to look at that art and really feel that there was someone carrying on the tradition and style of Hal Foster and Alex Raymond. The art was so clean and again that mannerisms and poses of the figures made me think that he must have had live models for every panel. Not the case. Steve Rude is just that good and experienced.
So, the cool thing about living in this day and age is that we get the opportunity to see artists work and interact with them, and Steve is no exception. He does a weekly live stream on youtube where he essentially does an hour long drawing lesson and if that weren’t enough he literally answers every question people write to him.
Other than being an artist he’s best known for being the creator of NEXUS. I’m not 100 percent sure about how long the series has run for and to be honest I think there was a bit of a hiatus or two in the series as maybe rights were an issue once upon a time. I may be wrong since I think he’s always been the owner of the character, but there may have been breaks here and there.
Nonetheless, like any awesome comic book, inevitably there needs to be an animated version of it, and he tried for many years and sank a ton of his own money into getting an animated series picked up by creating a proof of concept. This book is essentially the templates for the animators to use when drawing the characters and settings. A style guide I guess is what you would call it. In film it would be used very similarly to a story bible. It’s just a way of keeping all the collaborators on the same path.
I love this book just because you don’t really get to see too many things like this. All the things shows and productions have to do just to get it up and running it’s really fascinating.
For the most part it’s a black and white book with occasional color illustrations thrown in. Definitely pick up a copy of this if you are interested in the way animated shows are put together or if you are just a fan of Steve Rude’s. I’ll leave his website in the description.
