🔍 Facts of the Case

The accused Quick was a nurse who suffered from diabetes. One day, after taking insulin but not eating enough food, his blood sugar level dropped very low (hypoglycemia).

Because of this condition, he lost self-control and assaulted a patient at the hospital. Quick argued that he was acting in a state of automatism and therefore should not be held criminally responsible.

Whether the accused’s condition caused by low blood sugar due to insulin should be treated as insanity or automatism.

🧑‍⚖️ Judgment of the Court

The Court of Appeal (England) held that:

👉 The condition was caused by an external factor (insulin) rather than a disease of the mind.
Therefore, the defence of automatism could apply instead of insanity.

Automatism means an act done without control of the mind.

If the condition is caused by an external factor, it may lead to automatism.

If caused by an internal disease of the mind, it may amount to insanity.
