Triplet Groupings And Grooves, for Bass and Tap, Jim Creeggan

Описание: I started these exercises to understand the rhythmic relationship between the drums and bass when they are expressing different groupings of triplets. It was an effort to internalize these relationships so that I could identify them in an improvised context. The exercise was performed over a 12 bar Blues in Bb, but can be played over other forms as well. These grooves and implied tempos were introduced to me by Ari Hoenig and Johannes Weidenmueller's, specifically in their books "Intro To Polyrhythms" and "Metric Modulations". Thanks so much for your teaching! Thanks also to Ian Stewart and his book with John Benitez which reinforced how I understand triplet groupings.
There is a transcription link below that includes bass and tap dance notation. Thanks to my brother Andrew Creeggan for laying out the transcription format. I also included triplet breakdowns in a notation style that helps me understand their relationships. This was inspired by Billy Martin's "Riddim" book which is a whole rhythmic journey in itself!.

Some explanations:
1/ In the second figure off the top of the video, I play straight eighth notes in my feet. This was intended to show the contrast between an eighth note triplet grid and a straight eighth note grid.

2/ In triplets grouped in 5, 7, and 9, the groupings will not always line up with the chord changes at the bar lines. The bass will either have to anticipate the chord before the bar line or delay the chord after the bar line.
When anticipating, a simple approach can be to play on any of the 3 eighth note triplets contained in the fourth beat of the preceding bar.
When delaying, I like to aim for the second eighth note triplet in the first beat of the bar.

3/ In triplets grouped in 5, 7, and 9, I reset the grouping cycle at the end of each twelve bar blues. This was to keep structure to the video, but it's good to cycle over many 12 bar cycles to feel how the groupings sound.
