As a child in the Bronx, NY, Tahira Reid loved Double Dutch jump rope—but it took three kids to play. When a contest asked third graders to draw something they wished they could have, she drew a machine that turned the Double Dutch ropes, so she could jump on her own.
The Double Dutch machine idea was mostly forgotten until Reid was an undergraduate engineering student at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. In a design class taught by her mentor, Prof. Burt Swersey, she sketched out her ideas for the machine and led her team of fellow students to prototype it. After several iterations, they got it to work.
