SOMETHING IS MISSING IN DUBAI! (OPINION VIDEO)

Описание: Having just come back from a trip in Dubai, I kind of wanted to make this video to explore, unpack and maybe engage on a few things about the city of Dubai, from a South African perspective, things that maybe I found to be peculiar to me and different but sometimes stressful about the society they are building over there and the way I saw things.

First and foremost Dubai is expensive if you’re from SA of cause. The thing is it’s not US Dollar or Euro Expensive for a SAn but it still is R5 rand to 1 AED, immediately everything becomes pricier.

An example of great design and spatial planning ? Well, Dubai's isn’t that, well to me at least, its kind of a disjointed mix of skyscrapers and residential estates places in districts that lack any sense of cohesion.

What’s ironic is that the things I see in Dubai, exist even here in JHB.

It's pretty much impossible to walk anywhere, since the entire layout is connected by massive roadways and arterials leading from one giant development to the next.

On top of all that, the city lacks shared public spaces, leading to an overall void of togetherness that cities often develop around parks and squares.

Don’t get me wrong there are great places to hang out and Dubai makes sure you know where they are and what you can do there, but they just don’t flow into each other like in older global cities. Even maybe like in Istanbul.

But maybe its not only the planning officials that are to blame for Dubai’s feel, I mean having the chance to build a city like dubai from scratch could have given it so much room to bring out the culture of the emirati’s a bit more and given it more character.

There are areas, that have middle eastern texture and they look really good. They feel authentic. The sky scrapers don’t

Maybe I’m also just stuck with an idea of what it should look like. Maybe ndim oWrongo. Where I’m going with this is that when you look at the skyscrapers buildings in dubai some have the names of the developers who built them, like Emaar, DAMAC, Tiger, SOBHA and the likes.

These are the property developers leading the way in shaping what Dubai looks like really, the look and feel of the city.

I mean there’s nothing wrong in a city having a city centre that has that towering glass Manhattan look.

But too much of it makes people feel insignificant.
