In this team building exercise, the group is presented with a wooden "beam" made from two 2x6x12 boards laminated with the edges sanded to reduce the likelihood of splinters. The Beam is intended to be used with a mature high performing team that's ready, willing, and able to care for each other. It's important that participants are focused, physically strong, and understand how to "spot" each other.
The Beam is used well when exploring "the level at which you (the individual and the team) want to play". If you want to play at a low level then hold The Team at a low level (ex. waist level or shoulder level) - - when The Beam is held at a low level, very little teamwork is needed. If you want to play at a high level, then hold The Beam at a high level (ex. over your head) - - at this level teamwork is required to succeed.
After this activity is done the participants take a permanent marker (black "Sharpie") and write something on The Beam that reflects what they promise to bring to the team that will help everyone play at a high level. The Beam is then left with the group and is used as a reminder of what it takes to play at a high level.
This is the Christ School Varsity Lacrosse Team (www.christschool.org). They've won two back-to-back state championships at the Division 1 level. During this period of time I've worked with this team on leadership and team culture.
