Mace feels a strange tingle in his chest as he watches Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan enter the little shop that he has called home for the last nine years of his life. He tries his best to hide his shock and mask his excitement.

To see a Jedi after all these years, it is something he has dreamed of. Though he cannot explain it, Mace has felt the pull of strange memories. Of a life he had lived long before. Back then, he was a great warrior, a Jedi Master, and a war hero. He was respected and feared across the galaxy.

Yet he also failed in his greatest mission, to stop the Sith from taking over the Republic. Those were the memories that remained with him since childhood. His mother had said that he was just imagining things, and Watto believes Mace is spending too much time daydreaming instead of working.

But to Mace, it is as though he had lived a second life. The only problem is, none of it happened. The Empire is not even a theory yet, and there is no one who claims to rule the galaxy. More importantly, Sheev Palpatine is not the master of all. He is simply an up-and-coming senator from Naboo.

So those dreams were not a past life, nor are the visions of what is to come. Not when his body there looked so different from what it is now. No, he knows all too well who he is now. When he looks in the mirror, it is not his face, and when he sits atop the roof of their home to meditate, it isn’t his presence he feels in the Force.

He is no longer Mace Windu, he is the boy, Anakin Skywalker. And as he sees the two Jedi who were once his companions, he is more certain of this than ever. He allows them to negotiate with Watto, trying to convince him to help him repair their ship, to no avail.

But just as they are about to leave, Mace approaches them and waves his arm.

Mace (young): I wanna help. I know how to fix your ship, and I know about the Force.

Qui-Gon: Intriguing, young one. Though what I ask is no game. I hope you are not pulling my leg.

To prove his point, Mace closes his hands and concentrates. Though Anakin’s body is young, undeveloped, and still in desperate need of training, his mind is still his, and decades of knowledge flow through him.

It takes some efforts to get the movement and technique right, but he reaches into the Force and asks for its power. In fact, it answers to him far more than it ever did before thanks to the natural ability of Anakin.

Suddenly, objects begin to rise off the ground. Spare parts that have been left scattered around gather above his head and circle. He then pushes his hands forward and sends them flying into a controlled burst towards the nearby stocking shelves.

All of them land perfectly in their designated bins and leave the two Jedi staring with their eyes wide and jaws hanging open. Mace allows himself a small smile as he marvels at the power he has. With enough time, he is sure to become stronger, perhaps even more powerful than his original self.

Mace (Younger): You see, I am Force sensitive! I want to be a Jedi.

Obi-Wan: Master, this does change things. There is no doubt about it, this boy has power, and we should ensure he is properly trained.

Qui-Gon: I agree, I think that we should test him.

With Mace’s help, they convince Watto to help them. Mace is not nearly as knowledgeable about starships as Anakin, but he does know enough to begin work on it. And while they work, they also take a blood sample.

The results are far beyond what either Jedi expects, and they realize this boy might well be the chosen one. But as Mace hears this, his chest swells up in pride. He does not say it openly, but perhaps this is the Force correcting things. This should be how things were originally, with him serving as the guardian of the Force instead of Anakin.

This confidence leaves him saying more. He speaks to them about his visions and all the things he has seen. The rise of Palpatine, the Sith returning, and his old self as a Jedi Master.


Yet the more he speaks, the more concerned Qui-Gon grows. He doesn’t know of a Master Windu, as his place in the Jedi Council was taken by none other than his former Master, Dooku.

This causes Mace’s face to darken, but he hesitates speaking out of pity, hoping to spare Qui-Gon’s feelings about knowing what his master will do. Still, everything else he says stands, and the Jedi Master looks at the boy.

Placing a hand on his shoulder, Qui-Gon closes his eyes and taps into the Force for influence. He begins to feel his presence and reaches out to it. From there, he immediately senses the anomaly in it. Mace is powerful to be sure,
