Trombonist Jackie Souders was a fixture of the Pacific Northwest jazz scene for decades. Originally with Vic Meyers’ famous band, Souders started his own group “Jackie Souders’ Collegians” in Seattle in 1924, eventually growing into Jackie Souders and His Orchestra the following year. The year after that they began their recording career for Columbia Records, cutting “Every Little Thing” in Seattle at their first session. The band has a hot sound and fantastic brass section, supported by a buoyant and bouncy rhythm section that’s a bit more fiery than the gliding drive of the Meyers band. Vocalist Walton McKinney gives us a spirited chorus under which banjoist Forrest Hart and pianist Irvin Antes keep things moving. One of the cornetists (probably Herrick) plays a great Red Nichols-inspired solo too. In addition to Souders’ time in Seattle, he also had long stints in Portland, Oregon and Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia across the border in Canada.
