I recently made a video with a rain/thunderstorm soundtrack that I recorded from my house. A friend asked, can't you make that sound on your modular synthesizer?
Challenge accepted!!
Using the noise generator, I made the rain sound and split it into stereo using a delay. In the previous video I was told the rain sounded too steady with a constant volume. So here I used an LFO to modulate the VCA. While mixing, the modulation seemed too much so I compressed it slightly, leaving it there but less dynamic.
Then I made the thunder using noise through a low pass filter and randomly gating it.
I added "splash sounds" using noise through a low pass filter tuned higher with short random gates.
I added "drop sounds" using noise through a filter that is reverse enveloped. ( Low to high) Gated randomly.
In the DAW, I copied the splash sounds into a couple of additional tracks for more content. The copied tracks were offset time wise to "fill in the blanks" in respect to the source track. Multitap by Eventide added to each splash track with varying delay amounts to fill in more and add randomness.
Eventide Multitap delay (Thunder) increased the length and some stereo
Reverb on the final mix.
All this was generated in real time on the synthesizers.com modular. I ran it for an hour recording each sound into separate tracks. A good bit of EQ was used on several tracks.
See what you think.
