In April 2024, the Department of Musical Theatre hosted George Takei, Telly Leung, and Stafford Arima as part of a Musical Theatre Lab led by Professor Lynne Shankel to discuss "Allegiance", which closed its Broadway run 8 years ago.
This Asian American Pacific Islander-centered event highlighted one of the handful of musicals with a majority AAPI cast that was led by an AAPI director, and featured a score by an AAPI writer. Emeritus Professor Brent Wagner has taught a unit on "Allegiance" as part of his musical theatre history course for the last several years, where students can have the space to learn more and explore the importance of this resonant and personal work.
