Welcome back to Hacking Patina.
In Episode 3, we are back in the cold of Southern Colorado with "Chromo," my 1958 DJ-3A. We are tackling the fuel supply and the differentials, and true to form, we found some surprises that required a little hacking.

Here is how we kept this revival moving:
The 4x4 History: Some of you caught that I said "front and rear diffs" on a DJ-3A. You are right—DJs were originally two-wheel drive dispatcher Jeeps. But "Chromo" got a conversion early in her life to handle the Colorado snow, sporting a Dana 25 front, Dana 44 rear, and a T90/Dana 18 transmission and transfer case.
The Fuel Tank Hack: The old gas in the tank looked like "syrup", but the real problem was the pickup tube. It was clogged "tighter than Toby's assets on colonoscopy day". Since I couldn't reach it and wasn't going to buy a new tank, I did what a hacker does: I chopped the tank open, unclogged the line, and welded it back shut.
The "Varnish" Test: Before tossing the old sending unit, I tested it. It read about 78 ohms at empty and dropped to around 8-12 ohms at full as needed, proving you should always test before you toss.
The Differential Surprise: We flushed the milky sludge out of the diffs using mineral spirits and some "80/90" gear oil. The rear looked okay, but the front Dana 25 had a chunks missing out of the ring gear. A restoration guy would cry; I just buttoned it back up. We are reviving, not restoring. It’ll hold for now.
The Scoot: With new copper-nickel fuel lines and a patched-up tank, she fired up and pulled her own fuel. We took her for another scoot around the block—still no brakes, but now she’s drinking clean gas.
We are making progress, one "hack" at a time. Next up? Maybe brakes, or maybe we tackle that caked-up transfer case.
