A grade II* listed inn has been damaged by a suspected arson attack five miles from the Crooked House pub, which burnt down in August.
Formerly Stoke Heath Manor House, The Greyhound and Punchbowl pub in Bilston, Wolverhampton, which has wonky exterior beams, has been on the Heritage at Risk Register for more than a decade after complex structural problems caused by the introduction of a supporting concrete frame during a renovation in the 1930s.
Firefighters were called to the 16th-century building at about 3.40am on Saturday and had put the fire out by 5.20am, but more than a quarter of the first floor suffered fire damage. All three floors were damaged by smoke. West Midlands police said the fire service “believed the fire had been started deliberately”. The force said officers were examining CCTV and carrying out door-to-door inquiries.
Five people have been arrested in the police investigation into the fire that destroyed the Crooked House pub, known as Britain’s wonkiest, in Himley, near Dudley, on August 5.
The fire, which is being treated as arson, was followed by the demolition of the 18th-century pub two days later.
