'NATO membership for Ukraine is not a realistic outcome', says US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth on 12 February 2025 said,' The US does not believe that NATO membership for Ukraine is a realistic outcome of a negotiated settlement. Instead, any security guarantee must be backed by capable European and non-European troops. He added that it was unrealistic to expect Ukraine to return to its pre-2014 borders. 'We must start by recognising that returning to Ukraine's pre-2014 borders is an unrealistic objective. Chasing this illusionary goal will only prolong the war and cause more suffering', he said.
