The SAS Manthatisi (S101) is a Heroine-class diesel-electric attack submarine in service with the South African Navy. Named after the renowned 18th-century Batlokwa chieftainess, this vessel was developed by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW) of Germany and launched in 2004. The submarine is homeported in Simon's Town and is still active as of 2024.
With a length of 62 meters and a displacement of 1,454 tonnes submerged, the Manthatisi is equipped with advanced sonar systems, a Zeiss optronic mast, and a formidable array of weaponry, including eight 21-inch torpedo tubes. It participated in NATO’s Exercise Amazolo in 2007, successfully penetrating an anti-submarine screen of seven ships, including the USS Normandy and two South African Valour-class frigates, ‘sinking’ all surface targets.
