This setting is Part IV of a four-part suite of songs, which together work through Psalm 37 in its entirety—a Psalm of David which sets a contrast between the wicked and the saints of God, with special view of their ends.

The lyrics to this part of the Psalm, which follows the text of Psalm 37:30–40, are as follows:

The righteous mouth doth wisdom speak
His tongue will justice surely tell
The law of God is in his heart
His step won’t slip, nor will he fall

The wicked watches for the just
And seeketh him to put to death
