Dann was kind enough to add me on Skype and ask me to do a collab with him. I feel so new to the game, so it was really humbling that a lot of you are seeing potential in my channel. Dann is a super gracious guy and he was amazing to work with, so I thoroughly enjoyed this experience.
Arrangement:
Dann was kind enough to let me choose the song and do the entire arrangement. I had a blast arranging this mashup. Mega Man X has some amazing music, and Opening Stage and Storm Eagle are tied for my favourites. I had to arrange both in there as well as the classic Mega Man introduction. As you all may have noticed, I don’t like being tied down by one genre. I may be a little critical, however, I feel like a lot of metal VGM artists get stuck in a certain routine. For example, a minute intro of clean stuff, followed by 2 minutes of heavy metal. I like to break away from those formulas and bend genres as much as I can. I asked Dann to do all the distorted rhythms and all the lead work. He greatly impressed me with his work there. I did all the clean rhythms. I focussed on getting a lot of strummy chords in there so the clarity of the chord progression is nice and prominent. The sustain from the distorted rhythms gives a nice added colour. I obviously had to fit in a ska influenced section, cause really, who doesn’t love ska?! I may have been influenced a little by some Mariachi music. I don’t think I can go 100% in one genres direction, but taking bits and pieces from genres and adding my own style always makes this a fun experience for me. :)
Solo:
Alright so this section is obviously a little bit more metal. Mega Man music is pretty much made for metal. I have to be honest, I felt I needed to show off just a bit with the solo to establish myself as a guitar player. Yes I am new to YouTube, however, I’m not so new to guitar. I’m honestly not much a shredder, I just try and keep solos as tasty as possible. My sweeps could definitely be cleaned up, as well as my speedy alternate picking sections. I tried out a few new tapping techniques influenced by Guthrie Govan. I’ve never really written solos before, I mostly just improvise, however, this was so fun to do. I like pushing myself in my solo work, so I hope you all enjoy. :)
Bass:
I would consider myself a guitar player, not a bass player. However, after this cover, I can now proudly call myself a bass player. At least I feel confident enough to say that. I started writing a bass line for Storm Eagle, and I got a bit too carried away. I hadn’t realized how fast 180bpm was. My right hand was absolutely done from struggling to finger pluck at that speed. I forced myself to keep at it, and now after all these years, I finally have permanent calluses on my plucking fingers! Yay! :D I hope you enjoy the bass.
Dann Link:
I challenged Dann to do all the lead work for this collab. He managed to learn all the melodies and harmonies in no time at all. Super proud of him. If you haven’t subscribed to him, you definitely should.
