When in labor, it’s important to empty your bladder often, otherwise it can be a roadblock for baby to descend in the birth canal. This is because the bladder takes up valuable space near the uterus and vcanal, which is where baby needs to fit through. It’s recommended that you empty your bladder every 2-3 hours or so during labor, or whenever you are asked to do so by your provider. Your provider might also suggest that you have a catheter placed in your bladder to help keep it empty during labor, which is usually the case when you have an epidural since you won’t be able to feel the urge to pee.
