Grow Pumpkins From Seed to Harvest in Small Space/ Shirley Bovshow

Описание: Learn how to grow pumpkins from seed to harvest in a small space, by training the pumpkin vines to grow vertically up a trellis! Garden expert, Shirley Bovshow shows you how to start pumpkin seeds indoors, how to transplant the small plants into the soil, and how to sow pumpkin seeds directly in the ground.

By growing pumpkin plants from seed, there is a wider variety of pumpkins to choose from. There are small compact growing pumpkins for cooking and baking, medium-sized pumpkins for decorating, and even giant pumpkins for fun!

2 weeks before your expected last frost date, start pumpkin seeds indoors. They will sprout quickly within a few days. Pumpkin seeds will grow faster if you place the container on a seed warming mat or a warm appliance.

Shirley recommends starting pumpkin seeds in peat pots because you can plant the peat pot directly in the soil without disturbing the roots. Pumpkin plants have sensitive roots that do not like to be disturbed at planting time.

If you live in a mild climate area, you can start seeds outdoors in the spring when the soil temperatures rise to at least 65 to 70 degrees. The warmer the soil, the faster the pumpkin will grow.

Planting directly in the soil will need a large area to grow pumpkins but Shirley has an idea for growing pumpkins in a small space- use an arbor~ It's important that the long pumpkin stems (vines) have at least 10 feet of direct contact with the soil before training the pumpkin stem up the arbor.

When the pumpkin stem has contact with the soil, it's able to draw up water and nutrients from the soil. Use pantyhose as a swing to cradle and tie pumpkins to the arbor or trellis structure!
