T20 World Cup 2026: What Happens if the Final is Rained Out?
The T20 World Cup 2026 final is set to take place this Sunday, March 8, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The decisive clash features India vs. New Zealand. While the Kiwis are looking to end their trophy drought, India is eyeing their third world title.
Since two matches in this tournament have already been washed out, fans are worried that rain might dampen their spirits. This has led to a crucial question: What happens if the final between India and New Zealand is rained out? Is there a reserve day?
The Reserve Day Rules
March 9 has been designated as the Reserve Day for the final. If play isn't possible on Sunday, the match will be completed on Monday.
Minimum Overs: To achieve a result, at least 10 overs per side must be bowled.
DLS Method: If one team completes its 20 overs but rain interrupts the second innings, the second team must face at least 10 overs for a result to be determined via the DLS method.
Continuation: If the match starts on Sunday but remains incomplete despite extra time, it will resume on Monday from exactly where it left off.
Extra Time: Both the scheduled day and the reserve day have an additional 120 minutes each to ensure the game is completed.
Joint Winners?
If the match cannot be completed on either the scheduled day or the reserve day, India and New Zealand will be declared joint winners. To date, an ICC tournament final has been washed out only once: the 2002 Champions Trophy final between India and Sri Lanka. Due to rain, both teams were declared joint champions.
