Lime mortar will not have a negative effect on old, soft historical brick. Our entire house is double-wall brick on the exterior. Repointing this chimney gave me an idea for what to expect going forward when the time comes later this year to begin restoring the exterior of the house, which was painted at least a half dozen times before it was stuccoed over, painted a few more times, and eventually covered in aluminum siding. I will video the process as I do it, so please subscribe if you'd like to see more content like this.
I used a diamond mortar raking bit from "SHDIATOOL" on amazon. For soft lime mortar in this application, it worked great.
