FG 42 | Germany’s Paratrooper Automatic Rifle
FG 42 — Designed in Nazi Germany by Louis Stange and others at Rheinmetall in 1941–1942 for Fallschirmjäger (paratroopers).
When/Who/How created — Developed 1941–42 to give German paratroopers a lightweight, full-power automatic rifle that combined the firepower of a light machine gun with the handling of a rifle; engineers used a selective-fire, gas-operated long-stroke system and light-alloy/steel construction to balance weight and performance.
Operation (simple, non-technical) — Gas from the fired cartridge drives a piston which cycles the bolt, extracting the spent case and chambering the next round; the FG 42 could fire semi-automatic or fully automatic from an open-bolt-like recoil/locking sequence depending on variant, feeding from a 10- or 20-round box magazine.
Role & impact — Built as a squad-level automatic/rifle weapon for airborne troops, it influenced postwar automatic rifle and battle rifle designs but was produced in limited numbers due to complexity and wartime constraints.
Typical specs (approx.) — Caliber: 7.92×57mm Mauser (standard); Magazine: 10 or 20 rounds box; Operation: gas-operated, selective fire; Weight: relatively light for a full-power automatic rifle of its era.
Safety note — Historical/technical info only; never handle weapons without training, legal permission, and strict safety procedures.
