Zines and independent print media began to flourish in Indonesia during the 1990s, largely influenced by the rise of independent subcultures and underground movements. These publications quickly became important platforms for self-expression, the exchange of ideas, and social critique, capturing the pulse of alternative youth culture while embodying the spirit of DIY resistance against the mainstream.
In this session, David Tarigan, Herry Sutresna, and Arian13, moderated by Felix Dass, revisit this dynamic era to reflect on the evolution of zine and print culture in Indonesia. Together, they explore the diversity of content that circulated through these independent publications, from music and politics to personal narratives and underground art scenes, and how this diversity reflected the concerns and passions of a generation.
The conversation also dives into the production processes of the time, marked by limited access to technology and a strong reliance on manual, hands-on methods. This session highlights key zines from the era that left a lasting impact and continue to shape independent publishing practices today. More than a historical reflection, the discussion invites a reconsideration of zine culture as a resilient and relevant form of resistance and expression in today’s shifting media landscape.
