Contributions to the Society
Mr. Ram has crafted Choppies’ current staggering business model that features sophisticated supply chain management and aggressive cost-cutting methods. Over the past 33 years, Choppies has grown as a home brand in Botswana and spread its wings into many other African nations. Choppies’ business has profoundly altered the living patterns of local public, retail, and wholesale trading equations as well as the logistics of the transportation and distribution of goods. This model also helped Choppies to win the Botswana Presidential Award for “Best Social Serving Company “in the year 2015.

Agro Development
The company procures most of the fruits and vegetable stock from the local community and it creates local employment and helps import substitution and food safety. The company gives preference to small farmers, small cattle growers, small local manufacturers, and medium scale manufacturers and help them to market their product through our outlets. Choppies procurement policy creates rural employment, import-substitution, food security, poverty eradication, and a better entrepreneurial base for the local public.

Employment Generation
A sustained financial flow allows the local businesses to expand and bring in new food-related jobs in communities in all components of the food system, including production, aggregating, and distribution and processing. A typical Choppies store employs 60 to 70 people while Hyper Stores employ up to 90 to 125 workers. At present, in Botswana alone, Choppies employs over 7000 people and including the other African countries it operates. The company employs over 16,000 people.
Choppies is also the largest employer of people living with disabilities in Botswana. Choppies Botswana currently employs over 100 people working with disability (PWD) across all departments which is the highest in the country.

Tax Benefits to governments
A Choppies store generates substantial sales tax and property tax revenues for the country in which it operates. This could potentially be of great benefit to the fiscal well-being of the local government in the town or village where the Choppies store is located. Besides, an increase in the number of retailers in a city means the commercial property tax base of the local government bodies increases and it fuels property tax revenue.

Retail Training
Mr. Ram has established a dedicated Retail Academy in Botswana and South Africa. Over the past few years, it has trained more than 10,000 people.

Other Business Interests
Promoter and 50% shareholder in the Far Property Company Ltd which holds a property portfolio of more than $150 million. His other business interests include fashion brand retail firm JB Sports, Consumer electronics distribution firm Distron Africa, and various manufacturing and distribution firms as well.
