This video addresses a common open guard retention scenario where the opponent circles far enough around the body that posting or framing on the legs is no longer available. In these moments, we shift our focus to using our elbows, digging them into the mat to create a strong base that allows us to push off and generate space.
By combining this elbow post with continuous hip movement, we’re able to rotate and re-square our body so our hips and chest stay facing the opponent. Once we recover alignment, we layer back in our leg positioning and framing concepts to bring the opponent back in front of our knees.
This sequence brings together all the key elements of effective guard retention—elbow posting, hip mobility, leg pummeling, and framing—to build a simple but reliable system for maintaining a strong open guard. The emphasis is on efficiency, structure, and staying proactive so the guard remains functional even when the opponent creates wide passing angles.
