This arrangement of "Masters of War" by Bob Dylan from Worcester, Mass., in December 1995 nearly replicates the version he introduced nearly two years earlier in Hiroshima, Japan, on February 16, 1994, during that year's 14-date Far East tour. Once again it features the drummer-less, acoustic string band of Dylan and John Jackson on guitars, Tony Garnier on double bass, and Bucky Baxter filling in accents on mandolin - perhaps this time to even greater dramatic effect.
The biggest difference is in Dylan's voice. Whereas in Hiroshima, Dylan's vocal was full and forthright in tone, in this version he sings in an almost-whisper and draws out the end of each line for an effect that may send a shiver down your spine or stand the hairs up on the back of your neck.
The spookiness of Dylan's singing is reinforced by the extra measure of sibilance in his pronunciation, as well as by the sweet yet almost discordant sounds of Baxter's mandolin filigrees tinkling over the other instruments, especially during his highlighted solo near the end.
In all, a very effective and satisfyingly haunting version of one of Dylan's strongest condemnations of those who pit their desire for money and might against the value of other people's lives.
