The purpose of this movie is to show the value of 'The Journey', a systemic, transformative path, as a research model for the performing and creative arts.

'The Journey' is a cyclic, didactic model for personal development designed by professor Frank Heckman (Codarts Rotterdam), which links the metaphor of the Hero's Journey (Hero with the thousand faces, Joseph Campbell, 1949) to the principles of Social Ecology and Flow, the Psychology of Optimal Experience (Emery, Trist and Csikszentmihalyi). The Journey addresses five dimensions:
Calling | about knowing purpose, knowing yourself and setting goals
Fellowship | about key relationships, the social fabric and the environment
Dragons | about facing, embracing and overcoming challenges
Performance | about being in Flow, the ideal Performance State
Return | about bringing home the 'treasure', explaining and sharing the learning.

Henrice Vonck, research leader Codarts Rotterdam, has expanded 'the Journey' into a dual pathway, by translating its dimensions into a research intervention cycle, which enables performers to navigate on their own compass and rekindle their genuine curiosity in the world of knowledge and creation. The model also addresses the concept of Sustainable Performance, i.e. the ability to perform on a high level again and again.

To illustrate the research approach, Henrice Vonck made a pilot movie, presenting an interview with Ralph van Raat, an astonishing Dutch pianist whose Calling is to concur the world with his romantic and expressive interpretation of contemporary and avant garde music. He explains how research -- the combination of knowledge and abilities -- supports him in this quest.
