While doing menial tasks on a trashy big-budget film about history’s worst dictators, widower Shakib is suddenly cast as Hitler. As his status and income rise, Shakib is visited by Ladan, the sex worker he loves. Ladan’s violent pimp is searching for her, so Shakib hides her in a fancy house constructed for the film. Seyedi masterfully uses the film-within-a-film format to initially poke fun at the movie business, before Shakib’s pent-up anger at the system and his longing for happiness with Ladan propel the tale to a darker and utterly compelling directions. This stunning allegory for power, corruption and inequality features a magnificent lead performance by Mohsen Tanabandeh (A Hero, SFF 2021).
