STORYLINE:

South Korea posted its first ever victory at a World Cup finals with a 2-0 win over Poland in Busan, sparking euphoria and relief amongst its fanatical supporters.

The Koreans had not won a game at five previous World Cup finals appearances, but are under enormous pressure to reach the second round here after local organizers spent eight years and billions of U-S dollars to prepare to co-host the tournament with Japan.

There were scenes of delirium at University Avenue in Seoul where thousands congregated to cheer the hosts on.

Veteran striker Hwang Sun-hong gave the Koreans a 1-0 lead with a sweet 26th-minute volley, and midfielder Yoo Sang-chul blasted in from the edge of the area in the 53rd minute for the match winner.

South Korea play their next opponents, the USA, on June 10 in Daegu.

The South Korean nation expected, but now they believe. Advancing to the second round is no longer a dream.

The 48-year wait to taste victory at the World Cup Finals is at long last over.
