In 2013, China set about resuming its nine-dash territories and reclaiming what was "theirs" in the South China Sea. There was only one problem though, Vietnam, Malaysia and the Philippines had laid claim to those same islands. In this video Mr. Mitchell walks you through China's expansion into the Sprately Islands, Paracel Islands and Scarborough Shoal and considers the implications this may have on China's relationship with the USA. The South China Sea could hold the key to one of the many issues that undoes the US/China relationship.
In this series, Mr. Mitchell takes you through the history of Modern China from the 1940s up until the present day beginning with the Chinese Civil War and today covering the Tienanmen Square massacre.
Regardless of how "into" history you'd consider yourself, this is amongst the most important educational topics in the world. As we look towards the 2020s, it seems more and more like the USA is going to be overtaken by China as the world's dominant superpower. With this being the case, we ought to understand who they are, what made them the way they are, and whether they really are the "boogeyman" of world politics. It's well worth a watch.
