Use your microphone's polar pattern to your benefit. If it's a cardioid mic, point the rear of the mic at the sounds you don't want to pick up. If it's a figure-8, point the sides at the sounds you don't want to pick up. Use the design of the mic to your advantage to reject unwanted noise.
