How fast can you get an accurate first shot from the low ready position?
In this episode, Lil Buddy and I (Frigerator) work on the low ready drill, part of February’s monthly challenge from the NAAGA Shooting League. This drill focuses on speed, target acquisition, and consistent first-shot accuracy — all critical fundamentals for responsible firearm training.
For this drill, we load three rounds and begin in the low ready position. The objective is simple: fire one shot as quickly as possible, three separate times. Using a timer is key for measuring speed and the target will track your accuracy.
We used the Mantis X10, which has a built-in shot timer in the Mantis app. It’s a great tool for indoor range training because traditional shot timers rely on sound to detect shots — and indoor noise can sometimes interfere with accuracy. The Mantis system tracks motion instead, which made it a solid option for this session.
We ran the drill on B8-style targets. Lil Buddy shot from 5 yards, and I shot from 7 yards. We used my Night Stalker 1911 DS for this session. It had a few minor malfunctions, and after breaking it down at home, I realized it was overdue for a cleaning — probably 300–400 rounds without maintenance. After a good cleaning, it back to running Lesson learned: 1911 platforms may require more frequent cleaning than some other handgun models.
This was Lil Buddy’s first time shooting the Night Stalker, and she handled it well. I was happy with my performance too. The Mantis system definitely helped us stay accountable and track improvement.
We’re focused on building skill through structured drills and consistent practice — safely and responsibly.
