If the prognosis of the patient is not good, plastic stents are highly preferred.

In the case of distal cholangiocarcinoma, if surgery is possible, the selection depends on the patient’s overall status.
Here, mostly metal stents are preferred.
But if the operation is possible, the patient is young, and their fitness is good, a plastic stent might be a good choice.

Metal stents are preferred to avoid admission of the patient, avoid the need to change the stent, and prevent tumor growth.
Metal stents can also sustain radiation and other relevant treatments.
