Labor (your body getting ready + baby moving down)
1. Early labor
Contractions are mild, irregular → gradually more regular
Cervix starts thinning (effacing) and opening (dilating)
Can last hours or days
Usually managed at home: rest, hydrate, breathe
2. Active labor
Contractions stronger, closer together (about every 3–5 min)
Cervix dilates from ~6–10 cm
This is when most people go to the hospital/birth center
Pain management options often start here (epidural, IV meds, movement, breathing)
3. Transition
Intense but short phase
Full dilation (10 cm)
Shaking, pressure, “I can’t do this” feelings = totally normal
Delivery ,baby is born 🎉
4. Pushing & birth
You push with contractions
Baby moves through the birth canal
Vaginal birth or, if needed, assisted delivery (vacuum/forceps) or C-section
5. Placenta delivery
Placenta comes out 5–30 minutes later
Uterus firms up to reduce bleeding
After delivery (the “fourth trimester” starts)
Skin-to-skin, bonding, first feeding
Monitoring for bleeding, blood pressure, pain
Recovery begins right away
If you want, I can:
Explain signs labor is starting
Compare vaginal vs C-section
