In this video, I show how I use guinea pig bedding as part of my garden compost system.
Grass and green waste from the garden first go to the guinea pigs.
Their bedding and manure then move into a compost pile that can reach temperatures above 60–70°C.
I explain:
• Why compost heats up
• What happens when oxygen runs out
• Why turning the pile matters
• How structure affects compost performance
• And how this system supports worm production and chickens
It’s not a perfectly closed loop — I still bring in feed from outside — but I try to keep as much organic material as possible cycling within the garden.
This isn’t about perfection.
It’s about building a system that improves with each batch.
