In this video, Max breaks down how to use a Kestrel to determine your true shot group size—and why small sample sizes can be misleading. A common issue is people shoot 3 or 5 round groups, get a tight cluster, and assume their rifle or setup is dialed. But the reality is that those rounds could’ve landed anywhere within the actual cone of fire, which is often much larger than that single group suggests.
For example, your true group size might be 30mm, but you shoot a 3-round group that measures 15mm. That doesn't mean your gun is more accurate—it just means you got lucky. Factors like dispersion, standard deviation in muzzle velocity, drag, wind, and shooter input all influence the shot placement.
If you’re not accounting for those variables when evaluating your groups, you’re probably under-sampling. This leads to chasing your tail during zeroing, truing, or troubleshooting—thinking things are “shifting” when in fact, you didn’t gather enough data or are making adjustments based on incomplete info.
