Stuart Twin Beam Engine

Описание: Test running the Twin Beam Steam Engine on compressed air. This engine was built by unknown person or people. I had purchased it online. When I got it I test ran it to see in what condition it was. Needless to say it wasn’t perfect. The valve timing was off and I spent time adjusting both slide valves.
One critical problem was the right side engine beam moved from side to side about 1/8”. In fact the whole column was moving. After careful analysis I found someone didn’t bore the crank pin hole parallel with the crankshaft. I took it apart and rebored the hole to a larger size and installed a bronze bushing. Now it ran true.
The connecting rod mounted to the beam needed material removed as it was binding when the beam was at its highest point.
I took the cylinders apart and found the piston was 1/4” to thick, the piston was hitting the cylinder covers as it moved up and down. I turned it down to size with my lathe.
Another issue was on the left engine the eccentric arm wasn’t parallel to the base. I took the flywheel apart to flip the eccentric so it would be parallel, but then I found there wasn’t room because the base wasn’t designed to be made into a twin engine configuration.
Now I had to totally disassemble that engine to mill a wider relief to allow for the eccentric arm to rotate without being jammed into the base.
My plans are to build a Steam power plant around this engine. This will take time, also it will be quite heavy as just the engine alone weighs almost 35 lb.
