(23 Jan 2007) HEADLINE: Recovery begins of stranded ship
CAPTION: Salvage crews followed scavengers at the site of a damaged cargo ship off the English coast. (Jan. 23)

It could take a year or more to remove this ship from the English coast.
On Tuesday, contractors prepared to siphon fuel from the M-S-C Napoli. It was damaged last week during a storm. The crew of 26 was rescued. But tumbling overboard ... at least 200 containers.

They washed ashore, spilling an array of goods ... tennis shoes, barrels of wine. Drawing hundreds of scavengers to the beaches. Police later sealing off the area.

The Napoli is leaking oil. Removing it from the ship's tanks could take a week. A crane will pluck containers off the deck. Only then can the ship be moved.

Besides spilling a bounty of freight ... some containers carried toxic materials like battery acid and perfume. Authorities called the beach a complete mess ... looking like a landfill site ... Saying cleanup would have been easier if scavengers had just left cargo inside the containers.
