The 1965 Immigration Reform Changed America Forever

Описание: America’s immigration policy and border enforcement have changed dramatically over the past 250 years, reshaping demographics, culture, and politics along the way. With President Trump’s effort to end birthright citizenship now on trial at the Supreme Court, we may soon see another major shift.

In the early years of the republic, immigration was largely unrestricted, with policy focused more on who could become a citizen than on who could enter the country at all. That began to change in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, culminating in the restrictive quota system of 1924, which sharply limited immigration based on national origin.

The 1965 Hart-Celler Act reversed that approach, radically expanding immigration from around the world and embracing President Kennedy’s “nation of immigrants” vision of America. Unfortunately, it also coincided with the rise of the modern welfare state, which fundamentally shifted the incentives surrounding immigration. The result is a system that often rewards the wrong behaviors, fuels political backlash, and discourages assimilation.
