27 amputees participated in a trial where thermal electrodes were placed on their forearms. 17 of those were successful tests with patients feeling a genuine thermal sensation at their phantom hand.
These results led to the development of new bionic technology where artificial limbs can now incorporate temperature sensors, simulating the nuances of hot and cold.
