The HE LITERALLY RAN ON HOPE.
The many times I encountered Rev. Jackson, even managed press for him at CBC around the year 2004, he never quite remembered my name;yet, he always knew who I was—even here in this photo as he began to slow down.
If you read the book, I was around 14 when he first came to Good Street as a presidential candidate (1984), but I was always running around as a little girl, even younger, helping daddy with the sound system when he came through to preach several times, long before that.
He did have a nickname for me though, and it always meant the world to me when he said it:
Me: “You don’t remember me, do you?”
Him: “Good Street.”
He probably called me by my real name once in his entire life.
Every other time, even here when I ran into him again, one last time at a dinner in New York City in 2017, as he began to really slow down he called me by my home church’s name.
He was a soldier for justice, living, breathing Black history. He was a true heart-centered leader.
Thank you for helping keep hope alive, Sir. You were the captain of the call and response.
(Read the Call and Response, especially the chapter on Perseverance and you’ll get everything I just shared.)
I figured we were getting close to this, but you are never really prepared.
