A lot of riders assume that protecting the top of your skull is enough, but the data tells a different story. In street crashes, the chin and lower face take the hit more than any other area.
If you ride in a half-helmet/skull cap, you are leaving about 60% of common impact zones uncovered. If you use a 3/4 helmet, you leave about 45% uncovered.
That's why I always ride in a full face helmet - not because it’s perfect, but because it covers the injuries I actually see.
